A Tribute to My Brother Colin Braaf
May 7, 2007 at 12:33 pm | In Preparing to Buy Property | Leave a CommentA great man died just over a week ago. His name was Colin Braaf, he was my brother.
My previous blog referred to great men who live amongst us now. At that time, I must admit, I did not think of Colin as a great man.
But since his death my eyes opened! I see life in a completely different manner. Lots of things that were important suddenly, don’t seem to matter so much and things I took for granted has gained more meaning in my life.
Colin had problems with reading, writing and comprehension. We thought that these challenges were disabilities for him.
We did not realize the fantastic blessing God had bestowed on him! Cause God gave Colin a golden heart. Yes, his heart was pure gold! Even though Colin was 43 years old, Colin never really grew beyond the innocence of a child. He was a simple person.
But he was such an amazing person, though everything he did in life required superior effort from him.
Colin had his own home, his own, car, he had a job and he had a little girl whom he raised alone. She is now 5 years old, he had her baptised, she was enrolled at nursery school and her life was good and stable.
Colin had a very challenging life. He lost his mother at 11, his father had a drinking problem and Colin, with his challenges, was left at the mercy of his uncle & aunt to raise him and assist him in life.
His sisters and brother were themselves too young to care for Colin.
He never finished high school because he couldn’t, but through his diligence and hard work, lived as normal a life as anyone else.
Colin lived alone and every neighbour helped and did something different for him. And in turn Colin helped them wherever he could.
His funeral was a tribute to his life because through his death his siblings and their family finally put their differences aside and took the first few baby steps towards healing the wounds that were inflicted so many years ago and that almost crippled their entire families emotionally for so many years.
Colin, just one regret I have today…. I never got to say Good bye or that I love you my Brother, Colin Braaf
From
your sisters and brother Cecil………
